When I first started doing food photography, I was SO lost… (yes, there was a time when I had no idea what I was doing!).
I didn’t know where to point my camera. My compositions were messy and all over the place. When I went to do a photoshoot I had no idea where to even start! I could tell there was something wrong with my photos, but I wasn’t exactly sure what it could be.
Enter: THE 🙌 RULE 🙌 OF 🙌 THIRDS 🙌
And omg…when I finally figured out that I should be using the rule of thirds in my food photography it was a GAME CHANGER.
All of sudden, I knew *exactly* where to point the camera. I knew how to arrange my props and subject so that they created an appealing image. And my photos were turning out so much prettier than before!
And the REALLY great thing about the rule of thirds? It always works and it’s always attractive to the eye!
Basically…she’s never going out of style. 💅
You might be wondering — WTH is the rule of thirds??? Ahh, I’m so lost!
Don’t freak out just yet! The rule of thirds is when you position the most important elements of your image at either the intersection points of third lines, or along the third lines in your photo.
Let me show you:
See how I lined up the center of the corner brownie with the intersection of two grid lines? This draws your eye there while also making that piece look balanced within the frame!
Not only does the rule of thirds LOOK great, it’s also super quick to implement! If you’re ever feeling lost, this is definitely the place you want to start.
